The Massacre on Film
In the early 1960s the East Germans released a film which has been variously known as "Der Schwur des Soldaten Pooley," "The Story of Private Pooley" and "The Survivor."
It was based on the massacre at Le Paradis and the book "The Vengeance of Private Pooley" by Norfolk author Cyril Jolly (who is mentioned incorrectly in the credits as Cyrill Jilly).
The film was adapted by Franz Fuhmann and directed by Kurt Jung-Alsen. It starred British actor Garfield Morgan as Private Albert Pooley but Bill O'Callaghan's name was changed to Bill Carter and he didn't survive the massacre. The part of Carter was played by John Rees. Madame Creton was played by Cecile Chevreau.
