The Victims
IT is difficult to establish the names of all of those who were massacred at Le Paradis, particularly in the light of the fact that it took a number of years before it was accepted by the British authorities that a massacre had actually taken place.
Click here to read a list of all those buried in the cemetery at Le Paradis in alphabetical order in a pdf file. The names have been taken from our own research and visits to the cemetery and cross referenced against the names listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. Click here to go to a page where you can read about the cemetery, view photographs and go to the individual pages for each of the 111 soldiers buried there.
This list includes many of those who died in the massacre along with those who died fighting in Le Paradis and the surrounding area and who have their final resting place in the cemetery.
Trying to establish the names of those who died in the massacre is far from an exact science. Working from exhumation lists and other information we will be building up a list of those we believe were murdered outside the barn. We will add names as and when we receive additional information/confirmation.
We know with a fair amount of certainty that 99 men from the Royal Norfolks, Royal Scots and other regiments were involved in the massacre with two - Privates William O'Callaghan and Private Bert Pooley - surviving. This leaves a figure of 97 men murdered.
Below are the names of those we believe to have been murdered in the massacre. Click on the names to open individual pages to each soldier.
