Major General Ashton Wade
Major General (Douglas) Ashton (Lofft) Wade CB OBE MC
13th March 1898 – 14th January 1996
At Christmas 2017,Dennis O’Callaghan presented John Head and Peter Steward each with a book entitled ‘A Life on the Line’ by Ashton Wade.
With the book Dennis had written the following note (slight modifications shown in brackets):
Dear John
Find a book of the ‘old general’s’ life story. He was a good friend for many years and was instrumental in getting Le Paradis on the map. He worked hard with dad (William ‘Bill’ O’Callaghan) and then me after his (my father’s) death to achieve what we have today. Now the next generation can take it further so we do not forget the ‘forgotten’ massacre. The General served in both wars and was one of the few in charge of communications at Dunkirk. He was there. Hope you enjoy his time served. He was involved in many major events.
Your friend
As ever
Dennis (another piece of the puzzle)

He was also Chairman of Review of Sentences (Europe Board) which reviewed sentences imposed on those German, Italian and Austrian criminals, who, having been tried by British Military Courts were still in prison in Germany, Austria and Italy.
He was then requested to be a member of the Military War Crimes Court in Hamburg for the trial of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein during which Colonel Scotland the officer in charge of the London Centre for Interrogation (The Cage) , where Fritz Knoechlein was held, was called to give evidence for the defence!
